Installing and

upgrading

To install or upgrade the SmartFilter software, see the SmartFilter Installation

Guide.

Note: When upgrading to SmartFilter 4.2, the SmartFilter Administration Console,

Authentication Server, and Administration Server must be at version 4.1 or higher;

plugins must be at 4.0 or higher.

Upgrading

plugin groups

To upgrade plugin groups from an earlier version to 4.2, first upgrade the

SmartFilter administration software and the plugin software.

Then, using the SmartFilter Administration Console:

1 From the original plugin group, remove any plugin and deploy that plugin.

The plugin is upgraded and the original configuration is retained.

2 Create a new 4.2 plugin group.

3 Add the plugin from step 1 to the new 4.2 plugin group. The plugin’s original

configuration is copied to the new group and will apply to all plugins added

later.

4 Move the remaining plugins you want into this group and deploy. The new

4.2 plugin group is set up.

Updating the

Internet

Database

To effectively use the SmartFilter

software, you must regularly download the

current Internet Database from Secure Computing’s SmartFilter download site.

Secure Computing recommends that you download a current Internet

Database at least once a day. For details, refer to the SmartFilter

Administration Guide.

SmartFilter 4.2 uses the SmartFilter XL Internet Database. For a list of

categories that have been changed or are no longer available, refer to the

SmartFilter XL Internet Database Upgrade Guide.

Important: If you do not download an updated Internet Database at least once a

month, SmartFilter considers the Internet Database "expired" and will act as

configured on the License window.
